Frequently Asked Questions on FSSAI Registration

Expert answers to your business and personal compliance queries.

Yes, absolutely. FSSAI registration is legally mandatory for anyone involved in the food supply chain. Whether you run a large manufacturing plant, a local restaurant, a cloud kitchen, a retail grocery shop, or even a home-based bakery, you must have a valid 14-digit FSSAI number. Furthermore, food delivery platforms like Swiggy and Zomato will permanently block your listing without it.
The government categorizes food licenses into three tiers based on your production capacity and annual turnover: Basic Registration: For small startups and businesses with an annual turnover of up to ₹12 Lakhs. State License: For mid-sized businesses, restaurants, and manufacturers with a turnover between ₹12 Lakhs and ₹20 Crores. Central License: For large-scale operators exceeding ₹20 Crores in turnover, or those involved in importing/exporting food products and operating in multiple states. We analyze your business model and secure the exact tier you need.
For a Basic Registration, the process is quite simple: we only need the applicant's PAN card, Aadhaar card, a passport-sized photo, and a basic declaration of your business premises. For State or Central Licenses, the food safety department requires additional documentation, such as a blueprint of your kitchen/factory, a list of machinery, water testing reports, and NOCs from the municipality. Our team compiles and files this entire dossier for you
You can choose to register your FSSAI license for a validity period ranging from 1 to 5 years. We generally advise our clients to opt for a longer validity (3 to 5 years) to avoid the hassle of annual renewals. It is crucial to remember that your license must be renewed at least 30 days before it expires, otherwise, the department imposes a strict daily late fee
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India takes public health very seriously. Operating without a valid license is a criminal offense. The department can conduct surprise inspections and levy heavy penalties of up to ₹5 Lakhs, force the immediate closure of your business, and in severe cases of food adulteration, initiate imprisonment. Securing your license is a small investment that fully protects your brand.
